World Championships: Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke reach finals
Irish Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke are battling for gold at the World Boxing Championships in Istanbul.
Broadhurst defeated Indian Parveen in the heavyweight semi-finals and won by a margin of points.
Meanwhile, O’Rourke’s advantage was a unanimous victory over Turkish Sema Caliskan.
The two fighters will take home silver medals and at least $ 50,000 in prize money.
Olympic gold medalist Kelly Harrington and the invincible Katie Taylor are the only lions to have previously won a medal at the World Championships.
When he reached the quarterfinals twice, the former European Youth and Youth Champion, Broadhurst, was the fiercest fighter and had an early plan.
Parveen grew in this round, but Broadhurst’s early changes gave her a well-rounded opening.
It came in a split second when the Indian fighter tried to slam 22-year-old Broadhurst into a barrage of punches. But the 25-year-old Contra hit just enough to double his mind. She knock him down in a steady position to enter the final.
Parveen needed a strong finishing ring to get past Broadhurst and come back strong again but was frustrated by Dundalk fighter. A strong combination of finishes was enough to win 4-1 in two decisions.
Broadhurst, who will play for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games this summer, will face the Algerian Iman Caliph in the final on Thursday. Khalif unanimously defeated Dutch wine Chelsea.
Two games into the final at Broadhurst, O’Rourke gave Ireland a double boost of encouragement in front of the home candidate, Caliskan.
O’Rourke took advantage of his size and range to lead from the start but lost 3-2 in the opening round.
The second round was harder from the start as the two fighters exchanged punches. Also, O’Rourke’s two rusty, clean suits temporarily put the home fighters on their feet with 20 seconds left.
The referees confirmed the 20-year-old’s victory in the second round. It gave the Roscommon fighter an advantage in the final three minutes.
Caliskan needed a strong finish to reach the summit. However, the 20-year-old O’Rourke managed to stay calm and stop the Turkish fighter from doing any damage.
Although Diligence put pressure on him at the last minute, he opened and sent O’Rourke a punch to give Ireland second place.
O’Rourke faced Helena Panguane in the Premier League after defeating Mozambican Kazakh boxer Valentina Khalzova on Thursday.
