Phillips: Guardiola is legitimately regarded as the best player in the world.

After completing his transfer to “world-class club” Manchester City on Monday, Kalvin Phillips is “extremely delighted” about the prospect of working for Pep Guardiola. The Premier League winners’ third signing of the transfer window after Stefan Ortega and Erling Haaland is the England midfielder, who came from Leeds United on a six-year contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Although Phillips had been a member of his hometown team since he was 14 years old, the chance to train under one of the game’s all-time great coaches was too wonderful to pass up.

The club’s website quoted Phillips as saying, “City have again proven to be the best team in the country, with an amazing group and a manager in Pep Guardiola who is rightfully considered to be the finest in the world.” “I am really happy about the opportunity to play for Pep, learn from him and his coaching staff, and be a part of such a great club.

“City is a world-class club with a world-class personnel and world-class facilities, and joining the club is a dream come true. Now I’m eager to get started and strive to support the team as they continue to succeed.

Bielsa appreciation

The midfielder’s exit ends a 12-year relationship with Leeds, a team he went through the academy with and helped lead back to the Premier League in the 2019–20 season. Shortly after the trade was confirmed, Phillips wrote a lengthy post on social media thanking the team and its supporters while saving special respect for the club’s former manager, Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentinian is widely recognised with developing the midfielder into one of the brightest prospects in the English league. Before being relieved of his duties earlier this year, he led Leeds back to the top division.

“I’d want to thank everyone at the club for helping to make Leeds one of the top teams on the planet. Every coach I’ve played for for believing in me and teaching me everything I know.

“I cannot talk about Leeds without mentioning Marcelo, a remarkable individual. The best manager I have ever encountered is [you]. He was a man who gave the team vitality, gave the players and everyone else connected to the team the conviction that we were capable of winning the Premier League once again.

Gabriel Jesus’ £45 million transfer to Arsenal was finalised on the same day that Phillips arrived at the Etihad Stadium.

In a deal unrelated to the one involving Phillips, Leeds also announced on Monday that midfielder Darko Gyabi, 18, has joined the team from City for an undisclosed sum. The young player made 10 appearances for City’s U-23 team last year and has received 12 youth England caps. Gyabi joins Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen, and Marc Roca as Leeds’ fourth newcomers this transfer window.
