Graham Hume: Northwest Warriors all-rounder handed Irish call-up for New Zealand series

North West Warriors Graham Home has been called up to Ireland’s 14th squad to face New Zealand in the ODI series at Malahide next month.

The 31-year-old, a native of South Africa, influenced himself in inter-district races in the 1950s. He recently became an Irish resident, qualifying for Ireland.

There was also a call for the Warriors’ friend, Stephen Downey.

The Premier League batsmen are also in Ireland’s two T20 series against India later this month.

Doheny, top scorer in the T20 season, also scored 146 runs in 50 overs at the international level at 36.50.

Hume has taken 10 wickets this season, averaging just 9.40 in the pool over 50, and seven wickets in the T20 Cup.

“It’s always hard to face the best ODI teams in the world. But with a 30-point World Cup in the Premier League, this series is becoming even more important” said men’s captain Andrew White.

“With William Porterfield’s recent retirement, we have summoned Stephen Doheny to his first team at ODI. Stefan’s batting has impressed coaches and arbitrators alike. He is now taking on the role of defining and designing the county game and the Wolves.

“It’s also gratifying to see Graham Home get an ODI chance while qualifying for Ireland after a number of seasons.

“Home has proven his accuracy and ability to jump and move in home conditions. We hope his ability to herald early breakthroughs will take him to the next level.”

Ireland squad: Andrew Balbirnie (captain), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Graham Hume, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.
