Brittney Griner: US basketball star has Russian detention extended

The pre-trial detention of basketball star Brittney Griner in Russia has been extended by a month.

Griner, 31, has been detained since February after Moscow airport officials found marijuana oil in his luggage on his way back to the U.S. after a race in Russia. Also, U.S. officials said he was arrested illegally and should be released.

Griner, who is considered one of the best players in the world, could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.

The State Department said a consular official attended the hearing on Friday and spoke with Griner on the sidelines.

A spokesman said Griner’s condition was “but in very difficult circumstances”.

The Russian state news agency TASS reported, quoting unknown government officials, that Russia wanted to replace Ms. Griner with a convicted American arms dealer.
