Brendon McCullum: England appoint former New Zealand captain as new men's Test coach

England have appointed former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as the men’s Test coach for four years.

McCullum, 40, will play England’s first Test against world champions New Zealand on June 2 at Lords Stadium.

He replaces Chris Silverwood, who resigned in February following the humiliating defeat of the Ashes in Australia.

McCullum said he wants to “lead the team to a more successful era” with new captain Ben Stokes.

“In this role, I am fully aware of the tremendous challenges the team is currently facing and firmly believe in my ability to help the team become a stronger force in the face of the challenges,” he asked. ”

England have failed to win any of last nine Tests and have won just one of their last 17 games.

McCullum’s appointment continues to accompany Britain’s post-Ash reforms, with Rob Key taking over as chief executive last month. He replaced Andrew Strauss, who took up his post temporarily following the dismissal of Ashley Giles in February.

Roth retired as captain after a 1-0 win over the West Indies in March and was replaced by Stokes.

The England Wales Cricket Board (ECB)’s selection committee, made up of McKee, strategic adviser Strauss, CEO Tom Harrison and performance director Mo Bobat, said McCullum is an “outstanding candidate” for the job.

“I had very intense discussions with Rob Key about where a team was going, and I found his enthusiasm contagious,” McCullumsaid.

“I’m no stranger to making a change in a team environment and I cannot wait to get started.

“Ben Stokes is the perfect figure to inspire change around him and I look forward to working closely with him to create a unit that thrives around us.”

McCullum, who retired in 2019, never coached world-class cricket, but played 101 Tests for New Zealand between 2004 and 2016.

He is currently the head coach of the Indian Premier League team Kolkata Cavaliers. He previously coached the Trinbago Knight Riders for the 2020 Premier League title.

After two remaining group stages, Kolkata is expected to be relegated from the IPL next Wednesday, with McCullum expected to arrive in England later this month.
